fo.rtuito.us

YWAMer Bill Hutchison has an interesting post on his blog about fo.rtuito.us, a new website that randomly introduces you (virtually) to a “new friend” every four days. After four days of interaction with your new friend, you get to decide if you want to “stay friends” or not.

Bill sees this as an opportunity for internet evangelism. I think there are possibilities here, but the one drawback I see is that there doesn’t appear to be a local element. I was hoping that I would be able to specify that I only want to meet friends in my geographical area (which would then create the possibility of an eventual face-to-face relationship). As a married man, I would also prefer it if I could specify that I only want to be introduced to male “friends.” I signed up for the service to see what parameters could be specified, and it was a bit disconcerting to immediately be “introduced” to a female “friend.”

But it is an interesting idea. Thoughts?

random, knee-jerk thoughts:

~ very interesting and creative idea

~ is this an electronic version of something in the offline world?  i can’t think of a good equivalant

~ i personally wouldn’t want to do it...i’d rather meet people the ‘old fashioned way’—online social networking.  it’s niche oriented.

~ then again, i find that i don’t bump into many non-christians that way

~ it is an interesting extention to the concept of ‘go’ in eMinistry though.  currently we think ‘go’ is to ‘go online’.  this takes it to the next step.

~ i only like to receive email, im, voip, etc from my ‘buddies’.  i guess if i wasn’t like that, this would be more for me.

Thanks for the link and the comments. On the original article on TechCrunch there was similar feedback about localizing the service. I’m sure that with the way that startups are happening you will see this soon.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Bill. I just went and read all the comments on TechCrunch. Seems like most aren’t terribly excited. I wonder if it will gain traction.

Thanks for testing this, Frank.  Keep us posted.

[And I’m with you—it needs to have a local element.]

Thanks Neil. Actually, once I saw that it was introducing me to a female “friend,” I deleted my account. I just don’t think that it’s healthy for a married man to have an online friendship with a woman who is not his wife, simply for the sake of friendship (getting to know one another). And so, to be honest, I’m not really willing to test it any further.
